Weera – In-store sales

Keskuskatu, Helsinki, Finland

I have worked for Glitter as an in-store seller for around 1.5 years. Although my job title has remained the same since I started, I have been given more and more responsibility. Last summer, I was acting store manager for three weeks. In the future, I expect to gain new and inspiring experience in the Glitter world, and I am sure that my career will lead to new, responsible and inspiring assignments.

Originally, I applied to work for Glitter because I was looking for a job during my gap year. I had just completed my training as a masseuse, but did not want to work with massage. I was planning to apply to train as a dressmaker, but I soon changed my plans when I discovered how much fun and how rewarding it was to work at Glitter. It is a young, modern and constantly developing chain – so there are plenty of opportunities for development.

My everyday tasks are mainly centred on customer service, but I also work with orders and displays, which makes my daily work interesting and varied. As a Glitter sales assistant, you are never bored! There is a fantastic network within the company, and your colleagues are always happy and helpful. Our attitude is that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and that it is OK to make mistakes.

The best thing about the job is getting spontaneous feedback from customers. Delighted laughter and words of thanks keep your motivation up all day long.
All the different campaigns and new collections that arrive every week keep me on my toes, stimulate my inquisitiveness and make my working days interesting. It is fun to work for a chain that is constantly developing – it makes the work entertaining and exciting.

Jette – Store Manager

Ro's Torv i Roskilde, Denmark

It all started on an autumn day a few years back. In November 2002 I took a temporary job at the Glitter store in Næstved Storcenter – the shop had only just opened. I had quit my job as assistant manager at Blockbuster video in Ringsted and was waiting for something to happen; and did it ever! I started working at the shop in the run-up to Christmas, so it was a question of diving in at the deep end and working a load of shifts.

After a couple of weeks, I was given a contract for 20 hours a week, which was just what I was looking for. A little while later, I moved up to 25 hours a week; I loved working at Glitter on account of the great colleagues, the excellent staff policy and, in particular, my remarkably talented boss, Meta, who really knew how to motivate and inspire me in my everyday work. This played a crucial role in my development. She knew exactly how to pass the “Glitter Spirit” on to me and to provide me with one challenge after another.

But that was not the end of it. The position of store manager in Roskilde became vacant, and I applied for it. I got the job and was thrilled to be able to continue working for Glitter! It meant that I was to have MY OWN store. Brilliant! I was supercharged with energy, and I still am.

I am responsible for the everyday running of the store: sales and service, customers, training and motivating my staff, product displays, and so on. I love generating my own results, working for something and watching it succeed. It is an incredible feeling. Creating a good working environment for my staff makes me happy, too. All in all, my work here keeps me charged with positive energy.

At Glitter, all employees have excellent opportunities to develop by taking various courses, for example. I work for Glitter because I love it here. I put a lot of time into my work, so it is extra important that I enjoy it. Glitter is a company that just keeps on growing. It has an fantastic concept that I am proud to be a part of.

Sofia – Purchaser

Purchasing Department, Stockholm, Sweden

I started working for Glitter in summer 2003. Originally, I was a store manager and was involved in opening the Glitter shop at Gallerin Gränden in Lindköping. I then worked there for two years and learned a great deal. I had always wanted to work with purchasing, so when head office was looking for purchasers it was only natural for me to apply. To my delight, I got the job and started work in 2005 as a “purchasing trainee” to learn the entire purchasing process. I am now an official purchaser, and I love my work!

I have tried all kinds of jobs including riding instructor, waitress, hotel receptionist and flight attendant. Before starting at Glitter, I worked as a seller at the book department of Åhlens City in Stockholm, where my boss left to work for Glitter instead. Through her, I heard a lot of good things about the company, and when she mentioned that the chain was planning to open a new store in Linköping, I took a chance and applied for the position of store manager there.

I am now responsible for the purchase of fashion jewellery and accessories for our 200 or so Glitter stores. I spend a lot of time in Asia, as we go on purchasing trips 7–8 times a year. I also help to prepare our collections, co-ordinate purchases, travel to fashion trade fairs, seminars and product trade fairs. My tasks also include delivery planning, security, trend spotting and monitoring the competition.

As a purchaser, I have the opportunity to work with fashion and trends – which are two of my real passions. I also get to do a lot of travelling!

The best thing about Glitter is that there are all kinds of opportunities to develop and move up. I also love the fact that the company is developing and changing all the time.

Anton – Establishment

Project Manager, Stockholm, Sweden

I previously worked for the Dialect chain as a network technician. In 2002 I had the chance to apply for a job with Sven Axel Svensson Bijouterier, a position which involved being responsible for the Glitter stores’ consumables, fittings and furnishings, as well as dealing with issues related to IT. I saw this as the opportunity to take on an exciting challenge and to try something new.

After a while, I began to work more actively with Glitter’s store expansion strategy. This was really exciting and suited me perfectly, as it gave me the chance to work out in the field where “it was all happening”. Two years later, I had the chance to develop my role even further when I took on full responsibility for new establishment projects.

The best thing about my job is that no two days are the same. It is also great to be constantly meeting and getting to know new people, and to be the “face of the company”.

In addition to managing establishment projects, my everyday work consists of participating in the development of our store furnishing concept, preparing cost and sales calculations as the bases for decisions about new establishments and remodelling projects, working at the cutting edge with lease contract issues, and acting as sub-project manager on our computer cash desk project.

If you have the right enthusiasm, will and goals, you have all kinds of opportunities for personal development at Sven Axel Svensson Bijouterier/Glitter.

My motto is: “If you walk in someone else’s footsteps, you’ll never get there first”.

Rebecca – Marketing Manager

Marketing Department, Stockholm, Sweden

I started working as an in-store seller in Stockholm 2002. I had recently finished my graphic design studies at Forsberg College in Stockholm and needed a part time job while continuing working on my own projects. One year later I became store manager. After a short period of time, I applied to cover a period of maternity leave at the purchasing department, as I hoped this might give me a chance to develop my role at Glitter even further. Almost a year later I had the chance to apply for a position at the marketing department, an opportunity which put my academic education to better use. I have been working for the marketing department since 1 January 2006.

My job at Glitter is very exciting – I face new situations all the time, which suits me perfectly. What I like the best is coming up with a really good solution that can make things easier for my colleagues out in the stores or something our customers appreciate – and which therefore generates additional sales.

Glitter is growing and there is always something happening – every day brings new challenges! I feel that I am developing, which is incredibly important to my sense of well-being. In addition, I love colours, shapes, fashion and jewelry. So working for Glitter suits me down to the ground.
